Yeah it is annoyingly spread across a number of services but a device like roku puts it all within a couple button clicks. With streaming pretty much everything ever made is available with a button. Plus, how hard is it to pull a disk off the shelf and press play compared with firing up the computer, logging in, going to Amazon, finding the thing you actually want to watch, starting the download and /then/ getting to watch it? Blurays are still considerably higher bitrate (and better quality) than most streamed "HD" content. My bluray player has been collecting dust for the past 5 years now.ġ080p Bluray != 1080p stream.
I have several unopened bluray discs that I'd rather watch on amazon prime or netflix. Using optical media is just a PITA compared to digital streaming services. So that when you watch something, the first thing you see is the actual content of the show, and then, after you're already interested, they hit you with the opening theme music and some commercials. Commercial TV (OTA and cable) figured this out decades ago: they moved the first bit of content not only ahead of the first commercial break, but ahead of the opening credits. It's why I haven't upgraded to their "no commercial" service: it eliminates the mid-program commercials (which I don't mind) and keeps the pre-program commercials (which drive me absolutely batty!). I mind that when I select a thing I want to watch, I don't see that thing-not a single second of it-but instead am shown a commercial and then, a minute or 3 later, I get to see the thing I actually wanted to watch. I don't mind that even after paying for Hulu+ there are still commercials. On a related note: I don't mind that Hulu has commercials. But they'll settle for Netflix in order to get us used to the paradigm.
Well, what they *really* want is for you to pay them directly for streaming that they can control and revoke at any time.
You bet they would-because then they can take it away from you any time they want. Granted, not the same thing - but you would swear studios almost now prefer you to use Netflix than purchase Blu-Rays!?
